InsurTech Buckle recruits Farmers’ head of business insurance

The InsurTech Buckle has recruited Farmers’ president of business insurance, Sharon Fernandez, to lead its insurance division, as the commercial auto focused start-up continues to attract senior industry figures.

The InsurTech in October appointed former USAA CFO Kristi Matus as CFO and chief operating officer and Munich Re Digital Partners CEO Andy Rear as chairman.

Fernandez worked at Farmers for 12 years, holding leadership roles across commercial lines and non-standard auto. She was most recently president of the carrier’s $2bn premium commercial insurance business. Fernandez also previously served as an executive at USAA, where she spent 17 years.

She will report to Buckle co-founder and CEO Marty Young.

“Sharon’s background represents an ideal fit for this newly created position as Head of Buckle Insurance with her broad property and casualty background in both consumer and commercial lines,” Young said.

Buckle is focused on meeting the insurance needs of customers in the gig economy. It has received (re)insurance backing from Munich Re, via fronting carrier Clear Blue, to sell insurance to drivers on ridesharing apps.
