The Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) has pressed pause on a plan to link the cost of federal flood insurance more directly to the risks facing individual properties, after the Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer’s office voiced opposition to the changes.

The Trump administration approved changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) underwriting guidelines in April, as part of a wider climate resilience strategy to use insurance costs as a way to discourage development in flood prone areas.
