Chicago-based specialty carrier Old Republic (ORI) posted a $72mn underwriting gain for the first quarter, nearly double from the year prior, as the company continued to diversify its book into financial indemnity and property.

Underwriting profits jumped by more than 90%, to nearly $72mn, as the carrier posted operating income of $0.69 a share, almost 50% higher than it recorded a year ago.
