NAIC considering controversial changes to credit rating rules

Insurance commissioners will today discuss a controversial proposal to give the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) more power to assess the credit worthiness of privately placed debt securities and real estate investments.

Trade bodies have warned that the proposals could “needlessly disrupt important markets” at a time when insurers are keen to find investment returns in a low interest rate environment.
