The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) has reported nine new, large fires in the West, burning across California, Idaho, Montana and Oregon, and maintained the national preparedness level at 5, which was raised from Level 4 two weeks ago.

Level 5 indicates the most pressing wildfire situation, suggesting most of the firefighting resources available have been committed due to heightened fire activity in the country.
