Tropical Storm Ida is now expected to be at or near major hurricane strength when it approaches the US Gulf Coast, according to the latest public advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 05:00 EDT.

In its previous advisory the NHC said it “could” be close to such strength when it nears landfall.
