Whenever a hurricane approaches the coastline, CNN and The Weather Channel run endless chyrons with every cherry-picked statistic available. I live in New York, and upon hearing the news of Hurricane Ida approaching, even I ran out and bought bottled water and MREs despite knowing the neighborhood bodega is always open (come hell or high water).

The storms are often compared to notable ones of the past. "Is this going to be a repeat of (insert name) from (insert year)?"

Differences between hurricanes’ pathways and intensities are usually hot topics.
