Nationwide has appointed George Williams as COO for its excess and surplus (E&S) and specialty team.

Williams will be responsible for E&S/specialty business operations, claims, and Nationwide Indemnity.

Before joining the Ohio-based insurer, Williams spent the last year and a half with Guy Carpenter as head of global client support services. Prior to that he held various leadership roles at AIG.

Commenting on the appointment, Russ Johnston, president of Nationwide’s E&S unit, said: “George is a highly collaborative leader, with a career spanning global P&L, turnarounds, business systems and automations, as well as front/middle/back-office operations, credit, claims, product, and distribution.”

“I am confident George will continue the tradition of taking care of our members through a world class claims and operations organization,” he added.

Williams said: “I am proud to be joining a company with the tradition and history of Nationwide, and I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across claims, operations, and technology to deliver an enhanced value proposition to stakeholders.”

In June, Nationwide CFO Mark Thresher retired after 25 years at the Ohio-based insurer. The company in February appointed Russell Johnston to run its multi-billion-dollar premium E&S business.

Johnston’s arrival filled a gap left by the exit of Tom Clark, who retired from the role of president last year and joined Ryan Specialty Group in March, before abruptly stepping down from the post last month.
