Travelers’ underwriting income fell in the third quarter to $68mn from $281mn a year ago, as higher catastrophe losses and a shift to adverse development outweighed underlying margin improvement.

Pre-tax catastrophe claims cost the company $501mn, lower than the $854mn registered in the first quarter, and below the $700mn in cat claims reported in the third quarter of 2017.
