RLI underwriting profits jump to $13.7mn on underlying margin expansion, despite Ida losses

Specialty carrier RLI earned $13.7mn of underwriting income during the third quarter, a jump from $1.2mn a year earlier, as top-line growth, improved underlying margins, and stronger favorable development offset the losses inflicted by Hurricane Ida.

The Illinois-headquartered carrier posted higher underwriting profits in its casualty and surety segments, while the underwriting loss on its property portfolio narrowed.
