Willis Towers Watson has appointed Hugo Wegbrans as global head of broking and broking strategy within its risk and broking segment, in a major hire from rival and former merger partner Aon.

Wegbrans was global strategies leader within Aon’s commercial risk solutions business. He has spent most of his 35-year career with Aon, having also been global chief broking officer.

In a previous five-year spell at Willis, he led the broker’s Dutch organisation between 2004 and 2009, according to his LinkedIn profile. His latest move back to Willis will take effect early next year.

Willis global head of risk and broking Adam Garrard said: “Hugo knows the global broking landscape better than most.

“He shares our passion for innovation, underpinned by great people and superior data and analytics.

“He’s a well-respected people leader who helps teams get to the heart of what clients need both now and in the future.”

The appointment is one of the most significant for Willis since it announced a new global leadership team and structural rejig in August.

This announcement stated that from 1 January 2022, the global team will comprise two segments – health, wealth and career, and risk and broking – split across Europe, International and North America divisions. Wegbrans has been appointed to the risk and broking unit.

The broker then rolled out its second tier of major leadership appointments last month, naming new heads by geography, segment and corporate function.
