Axis Capital CEO Albert Benchimol said on Thursday that his company is placing profitability above growth in its reinsurance segment and that investors should expect the pace of premium growth reported in that unit in recent quarters to continue. 

The chief executive was speaking to analysts a day after the (re)insurer reported stellar fourth-quarter results, in which Axis generated a $136mn companywide underwriting gain that reversed last year’s loss.
