American Financial Group’s (AFG) combined ratio rose 2.2 points in the third quarter to 91.2%, driven by a 4-point deterioration in the loss ratio and weaker performance in the company’s divisions in specialty finance and property and transportation.

Overall the insurer posted Q3 cat losses of $39mn, which accounted for 2.5 points on the combined ratio, primarily due to Hurricane Ian.
