The Hanover anticipates $175mn of Q1 cat losses on winter, wind activity

The Hanover has forecast $175mn in Q1 pre-tax catastrophe losses that are estimated to contribute 12.7 points to its combined ratio in the quarter.

The insurer said the losses stemmed from over 20 weather events, including severe freezes in the Northeast and Midwest in February and widespread wind and tornadic activity that impacted nearly half of the US in mid- to late March.
