For those who remember the 1997-98 El Niño years and related headlines, the name might not bring the most positive memories; torrential rain, drought, natural disasters and viral outbreaks. For the Florida insurance marketplace however, El Niño is a slightly more welcome event which is tied to lower hurricane frequency.

The 2023 hurricane season begins today, June 1, and, after experiencing the second-highest insured loss to the Florida insurance industry last year with Hurricane Ian, and given the fragile state of the domestic market, this season could be pivotal.
