Tornado rips through Alabama, destroys hotel
A tornado tore across Alabama late on Monday, annihilating a hotel and killing at least one person.
The twister brought winds of up to 135 mph to the city of Fultondale, according to the National Weather Service.
Local media reports show a path of destruction across Jefferson County, where the tornado severely damaged a Hampton Inn hotel as well as several homes. Images show the spire of church ripped off also.
According to CNN, a young man was killed after he was trapped in the basement of his home.
Tornado warnings and watches have since expired in parts of Alabama and Georgia, but the same system is expected to dump snow across states further north in the coming days.
