Lemonade denies using ‘phrenology’ to assess claims

Lemonade has caused furor on social media after the company said it uses artificial intelligence (AI) to scan videos submitted by policyholders to check for signs of insurance fraud, leading to concerns that the technology is making claims payment decisions based on racial and social stereotypes.

In response, the company said it does not use “phrenology”, a reference to the pseudoscience involving skull measuring, or “physiology”, when assessing claims.
