The remnants of Hurricane Ida caused widespread damage and record flooding overnight on Wednesday, swamping New York City’s subway, spawning a tornado that ripped apart homes in southern New Jersey, and swelling a river that inundated homes in Pennsylvania.

The storm killed at least 22 people from Maryland to New York on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, including nine in New York City, eight in New Jersey and three in Pennsylvania’s suburban Montgomery County, the Associated Press reported.
