Intact’s combined ratio in the first quarter rose 2.4 points year-on-year to 91.7%, as higher catastrophe losses and less favorable reserve developments outweighed an improvement in the expense ratio of 1.9 points to 30.9%.

The Canadian carrier booked $182mn in cat losses that contributed 3.8 points tp the combined ratio, reflecting the impact of winter weather conditions and increased driving activity, which has risen from Q1 2021 but remains below pre-pandemic levels.
